12/27/91 — Our NICU Journey Day 41

December 27, 2010

Isaac — Not weighed

Molly — 672 grams

Here he is — Isaac off the vent and breathing close to room air. He surprised everyone, something he has continued to do. Just when you think he's stuck, he somehow pulls it all together. Amazing.

Isaac

Ike, I can’t believe it! You extubated yourself today and they left the tube out and you are doing great! They put you under a little oxygen tent. It’s a square metal frame with a plastic cover over it — so they could give you extra oxygen, but you are not even needing that. You are on room air and breathing all by yourself. I’m so proud of you. They said you might need to be reintubated, but right now you are doing so well. I promise I won’t be upset if you need to go back on the vent, but today was the first today I got to see your handsome little face. It was wonderful to see what a gorgeous guy you are. I got to hold you inside the isolette and turn you over. You wouldn’t think it would be hard to hold such a little person, but I broke out in a cold sweat. Daddy keeps giving you your pacifier. You love to suck on it. Goodnight, pal. I love you.

Molly

You lost a bunch of weight last night (30 grams), but we won’t worry too much about that. You’ve got time to grow. That’s all you have to do now. Daddy noticed yesterday that your ears are more mature looking, your whole face looks more alert. We can see your mouth now and you keep making all kinds of funny faces. No more Fentanyl.

That’s one thing I loved about the ISCU at Evanston. They were always so great about taking pictures of those ‘BIG’ moments in a premies life! Have a couple of those instant polaroids myself! They beat any ‘formal’ portrait out there! Congrats Issac.
