1/2/92 — Our NICU Journey Day 47

January 2, 2011

Isaac — Not weighed

Molly — 731 grams

Here I am holding Ike through the arm holes on the sides of his isolette. He's looking like a big baby, with a diaper and no ventilator. We didn't always have to wear a mask when we visited, but if we had even sneezed with the last 12 hours, we donned one. Becky and Ian always wore a mask when they came to visit, since children tend to come in contact with so many germs.

Well, Ike, the Wolverines lost the Rose Bowl yesterday, big time. It was not a pretty sight. Uncle Ed (he calls himself your “good” uncle) says to tell you that football is becoming a game of speed. I told him that you probably had a better shot at speed than strength, any way, and he said to get busy working out.  Right now, though, everyone just wants you to grow.  They upped your feedings and fluids today. Your nurses Jill and Karen both think you look bigger. I think your color is much better. When I see you now, I’m so proud that you were able to shake the infection. I’m eager for you to grow so I can hold you and feed you. People around here are starting to say really encouraging things like “when they go home” and that they will do a check “before they come home”. I’m starting to believe it myself, that you will actually come home. I don’t want to think too much about that, though, because it will make the waiting even harder. So, I’m still taking things one day at a time here. Everyone thinks that getting rid of that infection was a very big deal. Now they will try to get you on full feeds within the next week. I love you, pal. Keep up the good work.

You have a new doc today, Dr. Leder. He’s pretty sure you don’t have an infection, but they are keeping you on antibiotics, just in case. You were fighting mad when I came to visit you last night.  They held your feedings from 8:00 a.m. till midnight and you were hungry! But you still gained last night and you are back on full feeds tonight. You got another ultrasound of your head today and everything looks fine. Your PDA murmur is still loud, but doesn’t seem to be bothering you, so they will leave it alone. Keep growing, girl.
