1/9/92 — Our NICU Journey Day 54

January 9, 2011

Isaac — not taken (very sick)

Molly — 797 grams (with one arm board)

When I reread these journals, I was surprised at how relatively upbeat they were during these days of Isaac's illness. I remember them as harrowing, and that clearly shows in the exhaustion on Kenn's face in this photo. Isaac looks so vulnerable in the open Ohio bed. Each minute was a new struggle. But I see in the post about Molly that we were learning the everyday juggling act of worrying over one child while celebrating another. Any parent with more than one child learns to master this skill.

Well, little man, even though you didn’t like the spinal tap, we got good news from it. It looks like no meningitis; your count was within the normal range. You had a rough morning. Daddy was here with you all morning and you weren’t saturating too well. They took a chest x-ray and your lungs looked very cloudy, so they suctioned a bunch of gook out and you felt a little better. And you’ve been peeing a lot!  That’s what you need to do. You scared Daddy when you turned blue while being suctioned. But you are pink and gain and moving around a little.

Molly, you look so good, pretty as a picture. They started you on Indocin again today to close your PDA, but guess what? They didn’t take you off your feeds! Yay! You would not be a happy girl if they did that. You got some blood yesterday because you were looking a little pale, but now you are nice and pink again. Your heart rate keeps spiking up now and again — maybe that will settle down when your dumb PDA is closed. You were looking at me today, all wide-eyed, and I swear you smiled at me. I know this isn’t possible, but it sure looked like it. You are so funny to watch. When you try to open your eyes, you start at your forehead, then lift your eyebrow and then, finally, your eyelids open and we see your big beautiful eyes.
