1/12/92 — Our NICU Journey Day 57

January 12, 2011

Isaac — not taken (very sick)

Molly — 839 grams (with one arm board)

Here's another picture of me bottle feeding Molly. It didn't go quite as well the second day. Eating is hard work for preemies. It burns calories to take calories in. I pumped breast milk for eight months, but Isaac and Molly never did breast feed successfully. It simply took too much energy.

Isaac

Oh, boy, did you have a rough time last night. Actually, your day was OK until about 4:00 p.m. Then you had a bronchospasm and they couldn’t get you back up. Dr. Adams rushed in (she even got stopped by a policeman for speeding) and I called Daddy and we all worried over you for a long time, until about 3:00 in the morning. You see, your lungs are filled with thick gooey stuff that keeps blocking your airway. Most of your lungs are filled with it, but the small part that is clear is working well. Dr. Adams decided to give you some medicine (Mucomyst) that they give to kids with Cystic Fibrosis. Abby said it only had less than a 50 percent chance of working, but it seemed to help. Then they tried for two hours to get a central line in through the veins in your thighs, but it didn’t work. They stuck you like a little pincushion, poor guy.  Your day today was a little more stable, just one bad spasm this morning and one this evening.

Molly

It was so much fun to feed you your bottle yesterday. You looked at me the whole time with those great big eyes. So even though you were still in your isolette, I felt very close to you.  Some day (soon, I hope) I’ll be able to pick you up and hold you close all the time, without having to get anyone’s permission first. Today, I tried to give you another bottle, but you were pretty tired. You took about five ccs before you pooped out. But you shouldn’t worry about that. This is still very new to you. We’ve got a sign on your isolette now to let us try to give you a bottle once a day at 5:00 or 8:00 p.m., when you tend to be more awake. We will all get the hang of it pretty soon.

Can’t tell it here, but those little eyes turned into big, beautiful green eyes.
