1/27/92 — Our NICU Journey Day 72

January 27, 2011

Isaac — 841 with 1 arm board

Molly — 995 grams

Our home nursery: when babies come 16 weeks early, to say you are unprepared is more than an understatement. It's hard to throw yourself into decorating (let alone major construction) when life and death is hanging in the balance. But the ISCU staff was starting to say "when", not "if" they come home, so we decided to get busy.

Isaac

Today they are making a bold move, Ike. They are going to stop your aminophylline drip. You will still get it every four hours, but not continuously. They would like to your pull your PIA soon because they don’t need to take so many blood gases any more. And you are gaining weight (real weight, not fluids). Keep it up, pal. We were told today the infection that devastated your little body was a gram-negative rod infection. I looked it up, and all that really means is that it is bacterium that loses color when tested with a certain stain. There are all kinds of gram-negative rod infections. All I know is that yours was a really bad infection, and you beat it, buddy. You beat it.

Molly

Well, you didn’t make 1,000 grams last night like we thought you would. Your weight gain has been painfully s-l-o-w. And because you have had to fight for every gram, they have decided to stop the nipple feedings for a while. When you get bigger, we will be able to give you a bottle again, but for now, we don’t want to burn your calories while you are getting them. So for now, your feeds will come through the NG tube.
