3/24/92 — Our NICU Journey Day 129

March 24, 2011

Isaac — 1727 grams

Molly — 1850 grams with 2 arm boards

Just as with Molly's homecoming, we heralded Ike's grand entrance with a big bouquet of blue balloons (see the 3/7 post for the pink balloons). Our neighbors were so excited to see the balloons saying that Ike was coming home, even though most of them did not know Molly had been rehospitalized. If you look closely at the photo, you'll notice a couple of not-so-welcome details. First, it's the end of March and yes, that's snow on the ground. Welcome to Chicago. You can also see a red sign on the door. This was a warning sign letting all who entered know that there was oxygen in use in our house — highly flammable oxygen, so no smoking, thank you. Believe it or not, we had people balk about this. My, how times have changed. But, here we were, finally welcoming Ike home, and yet, he still had a negative weight gain as his last official hospital weigh-in. The speech therapists would come to play a large role in our lives, in ways we never expected.

Isaac

Tomorrow is the big day, Ike. We are almost ready for you. I wish you would eat a little better. I got a call from the speech pathologist today, who evaluated your eating habits. She says you have learned a few bad habits. You have to learn to keep the nipple further in your mouth and we have to support your chin to teach you to suck properly. In other news, your hearing test was inconclusive. Have a good night. We love you and can’t wait to take you home tomorrow.

Molly

You must be feeling so much better. Your eyes look wide and bright, and you were awake longer than you have been. You have also been an eating machine — taking about 90 ccs every feeding. We will be taking you home Friday after your eye test. We love you.
