3/6/92 — Our NICU Journey Day 111

March 6, 2011

Isaac — 1405 grams

Molly — 1721 grams

Here's another of our Molly "going home" series. We're in the lobby of Evanston Hosptial, waiting for Kenn to bring the car around. This was the farthest she had ever been from the NICU. Such a big step for all of us. She was too little to ride safely in her car seat, so we had to get a special cushion to fit around her. The excessive weight gain referred to in Ike's journal entry below actually happened later this day, so it is not reflected in the numbers above. Meeting Dr. Lum this day was a tremendous milestone. He has been Isaac and Molly's doctor ever since (as well as their two little brothers'), and a real rock in their care. On the ISCU (NICU), there was a huge team of specialists taking care of the babies 24/7. While we had nursing care at home for sometime, it was really Dr. Lum who helped us care for our still sick babies. We could never have done it without him.

Hey, Ike, all is well with you today. Karen thinks you might need a little Lasix. She says your hands and feet are pretty puffy and you gained more than 70 grams last night. That’ sounds great, but it’s really excessive. That means it’s probably mostly fluids, not real weight gain.

Molly

We met your pediatrician today — Dr. Lum. He’s a very nice man. You’ll like him. And we had some sort of good news on your eyes. No change. But it was different doctor who checked your eyes this time (Dr. La Franco). He will look again on Tuesday before you come home. You really are coming home. Just four more days. We also learned how to use your home monitor today. One thing we need to ask Dr. Lum about. I think your eyes look pretty puffy today. Maybe you need some more Lasix.

I just read from post 66 to this one. (I read 1-65 yesterday…) I’ve been clicking ‘next’ now for a couple hours and then I was so confused when I couldn’t click to see day 112. I guess I finally caught up to today and it’s a little sad!! I guess I’ll have to wait until tomorrow with everyone else!

Wow, that’s dedication. The next post goes up at 12:10 a.m. CT tomorrow morning. If you like this, I hope you’ll like the memoir I’m writing about our whole experience of raising them from birth through 18. Thanks so much for reading.
